Best Time to Visit Koh Samui

Thailand has a tropical climate with two seasons: dry and wet. The best time to visit Koh Samui is during the dry season, from December to March. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!

The average annual temperature in Koh Samui is 28°C. We visited the Lamai Overlap Stone in mid-April and had fantastic weather. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the burning sun.

How to Get to Overlap Stone Camp View + Parking

You can get to Overlap Stone by motorbike, car, or on foot if you are in the Lamai area. The easiest way to get to the attraction is by motorbike. But as the paved road uphill is very steep, hire a more powerful motorbike. Although you can also walk there, we don’t recommend it, as the heat on the island is often burning, and it’s at least a 30-minute walk from the Lamai Beach area.

We rented a scooter for 250 THB (7.5 USD) per day and drove there. There is a large car park, where you can leave your motorbike for free. Once you arrive, buy your entrance ticket and visit the viewpoint.

Alternatively, you can join an organized tour that includes transport. Book your Koh Samui half-day tour here.

Overlap Stone Hike & Viewpoint

Looking for one of the best viewpoints on Koh Samui? Previously, you had to walk through the jungle to visit this beautiful 8-meter-high giant natural formation. But now, there are stairs and bridges leading to the rock. You can reach the viewpoint from the parking lot in just a 5-minute walk. The paved road is a bit steep uphill.

This balancing stone on top of another large rock offers a unique photo spot and attracts locals and tourists alike. You can walk to the rock at your own risk, but be careful, as there were no handrails on our visit! If you have a drone, bring it with you because the views from above are stunningly beautiful.

Overlap Stone viewpoint

The grounds are well-maintained, and there are a few places where you can relax and enjoy the view. But with all the new construction, like metal bridges, handrails, and stairs, it has lost its real charm. In our opinion, this viewpoint is overpriced. We recommend you come early in the morning as there will be a lot of tourists later and you may have to queue for a photo.

The entrance ticket includes a free soft drink, which you can get at the entrance after the visit. There is also a toilet.

If you don’t want to pay that much for a viewpoint, we suggest you visit Overlap Stone 2.

Don’t forget to buy travel insurance! We always choose SafetyWing for our travels.

Overlap Stone 2

When you have finished visiting Overlap Stone 1, we recommend you also visit Overlap Stone 2, as they are close to each other. You can reach it by scooter in a few minutes and park for free. Alternatively, if you don’t want to ride your motorbike up the steep road, leave your motorbike here, and you can walk to the parking lot in about 10 minutes.

Once you arrive at the car park, you can reach the viewpoint in about 10 minutes. You’ll have to hike approximately 200 meters on a small path in the jungle, with signs showing the way. However, it is not recommended after rain or if the weather is bad because the trail can be dangerous and slippery. Do not hike in flip-flops! Wear hiking sandals or sports shoes and lightweight, quick-dry clothes, as the weather is always warm and humid.

Alternatively, you can walk to the viewpoint on the longer, approximately 550-meter path, which is also signposted.

At Overlap Stone 2, you will meet fewer tourists, and the entrance fee is only 20 Baht (0.60 USD) per person. You can buy cold coconuts or drinks there and enjoy the magical view. There is also a hand-shaped platform where you can also take beautiful pictures. Then combine your visit with exploring the stunning Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks or Crystal Beach.
