Best Time to Visit Koh Samui
Thailand has a tropical climate with two seasons: dry and wet. The best time to visit Koh Samui is during the dry season, from December to March. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!
The average annual temperature in Koh Samui is 28°C. We visited the temples in mid-April and had fantastic weather. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the burning sun.
How to Get to Wat Plai Laem
You can easily get to the temple by scooter or car. There is a large parking lot where parking is free.
We rented a scooter for 250 THB (7.5 USD) per day and drove there.
Alternatively, you can join an organized group or private tour that includes transport. You can explore stunning temples, enjoy breathtaking views of the island, and visit Na Muang Waterfall. The tour price includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, an English-speaking guide, a bottle of water, entrance fees, and transportation by air conditioned minivan.
Wat Plai Laem Temple
Once you arrive at the parking lot, you can easily visit Wat Plai Laem Temple, just a 5-minute walk away. The highlight of the temple is the 18-arm Guanyin statue, which offers incredible photo opportunities. It was built in honor of Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of compassion and mercy. Don’t miss the giant smiling Buddha statue.
We recommend you come early in the morning as there will be a lot of tourists later and you may have to queue for a photo.

Although we have visited many temples in Thailand, we think Wat Plai Laem is one of the most impressive because of its giant, colorful sculptures.
This modern Buddhist temple, built in 2004, features a mix of traditional Thai and Chinese architectural styles with vibrant colors, intricate carvings, and ornate decorations.
The tranquil atmosphere and the peaceful artificial lake surrounding the temple complex make the experience even more magical.
Beautiful koi fish and catfish are swimming in the lotus pond. There is a fish food vending machine next to the pond where you can buy fish food for 10 Baht (0.30 USD) and feed them.
There are also small, colorful shrines and statues of various Buddhist and Hindu mythological figures.
Wat Plai Laem Dress Code
There is a dress code, so you should wear respectful clothing when visiting the temple. So don’t wear a swimsuit, short pants, miniskirt, or swimsuit.
You can only enter the temple without shoes. Women must cover their shoulders. You can borrow a free scarf to cover your shoulders or knees.

Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple)
Then, combine your visit with the Big Buddha Temple, just a 15-minute walk away. The temple is a stunning sight, with its 12-meter-high golden Buddha statue that can be seen from afar. Once you arrive, climb the steps to the top and enjoy a great view of the sea and the surrounding area.
Wat Phra Yai temple is also free to visit. In the temple, you can ask for a blessing from the monks.
There are also small cafés and stalls where you can buy clothes or handicrafts.
Wat Plai Laem Opening Hours & Entrance Fee
The temple is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, and admission is free. However, you can donate to the temple.
Where to Stay in Koh Samui
We recommend staying on the east side of the island (near Chaweng Beach), as it is easier to explore the attractions from there. There are many luxury hotels and resorts in Koh Samui, but accommodation options are available for all budgets. These are our recommendations.
