How to Visit Banyumala Twin Waterfall in North Bali

Banyumala Waterfall is undoubtedly one of the most impressive waterfalls in Bali, and we loved exploring it. The natural pool is surrounded by large rocks and lush green vegetation, making it the perfect place to take some unforgettable photos and a refreshing dip.

Munduk is the best base for visiting the waterfall. But you can also take a day trip from Ubud, Canggu, or Seminyak.

The name of the waterfall consists of two words, translated from the Indonesian language, Banyu means water, and Mala means bad influence. Due to its name, the locals believe that bathing in this water will cleanse their souls from sins and bad influences.

This ultimate guide to Banyumala Twin Waterfalls includes the best time to visit, how to get there, what to expect on the hike, and which places can be combined with a visit.

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, Bali

Where is Banyumala Waterfall?

The Banyumala Twin Waterfalls are located in Nort Bali, Indonesia, about a 2-hour drive from Ubud and 30 minutes from Munduk Village, near Wanagiri.

When is the Best Time to Visit Banyumala Waterfall, Bali?

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions.

Bali has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather, and the average temperature is around 27°C all year round. The rainy season runs from November to March.

The most beautiful sight is during the rainy season or after heavy rains when the waterfall is powerful and intense. However, access to the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls can be more difficult during the rainy season, when the path is too muddy and slippery.

Before you visit the Munduk area, check the weather forecast, as the weather in the highlands of North Bali is often unpredictable. We visited the waterfall in May and enjoyed the fantastic scenery. As this is a popular attraction in Bali, we recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

How to Get to Banyumala Waterfall

The best way to visit the waterfall is to rent a scooter or hire a private driver. Alternatively, you can join an organized shared or private tour that includes transportation.

Rent a private car with a driver to easily explore Bali’s attractions through Viator or GetYourGuide.

We rented a scooter and explored Ubud and Munduk at our own pace. Scooter rental starts from 80,000 IDR (5 USD) per day. If you rent a scooter for several days, ask for a discount. Traffic in Bali is chaotic, so always wear a helmet and don’t drive at night!

After visiting Tamblingan Lake, we arrived at the waterfall by motorbike. The parking fee during our visit was 2,000 IDR.

Once you arrive, buy your entrance ticket and hike down to the waterfall. You don’t need a local guide, as you can visit the waterfall on your own.

Trekking to Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

The stunning Banyumala Waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers a tranquil atmosphere, making it the perfect place for nature lovers.

It takes about 15 minutes to reach the twin waterfalls from the ticket office. First, you have to walk on a concrete path, and then, at the end of the path, there are stairs leading to the waterfall.

The stairs leading down are generally well maintained, but be careful as the path can be slippery in some places. While hiking, go slowly and hold on to the handrails next to the stairs.

This tour is not recommended for people with knee problems or the elderly.

During our visit, some people were hiking in flip-flops. However, due to the slippery parts, we recommend wearing sports shoes.

Next to the waterfall, there are changing rooms and toilets. The swimming area is not too huge, and the water is not so deep, so you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the clean pool after your hike.

There is a second waterfall a few minutes walk away, which is also worth visiting.

TIP
If you want to take a good photo, walk along the bamboo bridge so that the waterfall is your background, or go to the bottom of the waterfall and stand on a rock.

The hike to the waterfall is easy to moderate, but the way back can be challenging in the humid heat. Locals will take you back to the parking lot on a motorbike for 25,000 IDR.
