Best Time to Visit Delhi
The best time to visit Delhi is during the cooler months, from November to March when the weather is more pleasant during the day.
We visited Ugrasen ki Baoli at the end of March and had fantastic weather. As it’s a popular attraction in Delhi and many locals like to hang out here, we recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds (especially if you want to take good photos).
The busiest period in India is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!
Agrasen ki Baoli Haunted Story & History
The stepwell (baoli) is primarily an underground water storage structure built for seasonal fluctuations in water supply. It was built by Maharaja Ugrasen in the 14th Century CE. This ancient stepwell is 60 meters long, 15 meters wide, and consists of 108 steps.
It was built of rubble and dressed stones. The main feature of the structure is the long flight of steps leading down to the steep well situated in the north. The steps are flanked on both sides by thick walls with a series of arched corridors.
According to many stories, Agrasen ki Baoli is a haunted place. It is said that the hypnotic charm of Baoli’s black water invited people to jump in and commit suicide. Although this mysterious black water is no longer there, some tourists claim to be “followed” in the stepwell as they hear footsteps. Legends say that the baoli is still haunted by ghosts and demons that lurk there.

How to Get to Agrasen ki Baoli
You can get to the Stepwell by taxi, metro, Uber, or tuk-tuk. Alternatively, you can join an organized group or private tour, which includes transport.
Most city tours include a visit to the haunted Stepwell. You can easily combine your visit with the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Lotus Temple, India Gate, Lodhi Garden, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.
If you arrive by car, there is no parking in the area. Another option is to hire a tuk-tuk driver for a whole day and customize your city tour. We have also been on such a tour, and we do not recommend it, because they will take you to shops that you probably won’t be interested in, but will force you to visit them.
Agrasen ki Baoli nearest metro station
The nearest metro station is Janpath station. From here, you can walk to the stepwell in just 10 minutes. If you are in Old Delhi, take the Violet metro line from Jama Masjid or Red Fort.
We bought a One Day Tourist Smart Card, which cost 200 INR (2,30 USD) per person (Rs. 150 for the card and Rs. 50 refundable security deposit).
The 3-Day Tourist Smart Card costs 500 INR (6 USD) per person (including a refundable security deposit of Rs. 50).
