How to Visit Safdarjung Tomb in Delhi
Safdarjung Tomb was one of our favorite monuments in Delhi, which is less visited than the popular Humayun’s Tomb and much cheaper. We only met a few locals during our visit and loved exploring this peaceful place. You can easily get to the tomb by metro and combine your visit with the nearby Lodhi Garden and India Gate.
This ultimate guide to the Safdarjung Tomb includes the best time to visit, how to get there, and practical information.

Where is Safdarjung Tomb?
Safdarjung’s Tomb is a red sandstone and marble mausoleum just a short walk from Lodhi Garden in Delhi, India.
Best Time to Visit Delhi
The best time to visit Delhi is during the cooler months, from November to March when the weather is more pleasant during the day.
We visited Safdarjung’s Tomb at the end of March and had fantastic weather. We recommend planning your visit in the morning when the temperature is pleasant for exploring or in the evening when the tomb is illuminated. The tomb is usually illuminated from 7 PM to 11 PM.
The busiest period in India is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!
How to Get to Safdarjung Tomb
You can get to the tomb by taxi, bus, metro, Uber, or tuk-tuk. Alternatively, you can join an organized group or private tour, which includes transport. Free parking is available if you arrive by car.
Most guided city tours do not include this attraction. For the best experience, explore Delhi by night on this private evening tour and see Lodhi Garden, Safdarjung Tomb, Agrasen ki Baoli, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and India Gate.
Another option is to hire a tuk-tuk driver for a whole day and customize your city tour. We have also been on such a tour, and we do not recommend it, because they will take you to shops that you probably won’t be interested in, but will force you to visit them.
Safdarjung Tomb nearest metro station
You can easily get here on the yellow metro line. The nearest metro station is Jor Bagh, which is a 10-minute walk from the tomb.
We bought a One Day Tourist Smart Card, which cost 200 INR (2,30 USD) per person (Rs. 150 for the card and Rs. 50 refundable security deposit).
The 3-Day Tourist Smart Card costs 500 INR (6 USD) per person (including a refundable security deposit of Rs. 50).

Safdarjung Tomb History
Safdarjung’s Tomb is the last enclosed garden tomb in Delhi, following the tradition of Humayun’s Tomb, though much less grand in scale. It was built between 1753 and 1754 by Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula as a tribute to his father’s memory, Mirza Muqim Abul Mansur Khan, popularly known as Safdarjung. The Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah gave him the title of “Safdar Jang”.
Safdarjung Mausoleum
Walk through the main entrance, and you’ll see the vast garden. It has a symmetrical layout, with water channels and lush greenery. The mausoleum is a two-story structure with a stunning dome and central chamber surrounded by eight apartments.
It has multi-chambered pavilions like Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Badshah Pasand (King’s favorite), and Jangli Mahal (Sylvan Palace). The intricate carvings and huge passages provide a perfect location for history lovers and photographers.
Plan to spend at least 1 hour exploring the mausoleum. After exploring the Safdarjung Tomb, we walked to the Lodhi Garden, which is free to visit and only 10 minutes away. The well-maintained park is ideal for pleasant walks, picnics, and exploring ancient tombs.
