Where is Akbar’s Tomb?
The Tomb of Akbar is located in Sikandra, about a 30-minute drive from the city center of Agra, India.
Best Time to Visit Agra
Although Agra can be visited all year round, the best time is from November to June. However, from May the heat is scorching during the day, so the off-season is only recommended if you want to avoid the crowds. The hottest months are May and June when temperatures rise above 40°C.
The busiest period in Agra is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!
We visited Akbar’s Mausoleum at the end of March and had fantastic weather.
In summer, especially at midday, the sun can be scorching hot. So we recommend visiting the Tomb of Akbar in the morning or late afternoon when the temperature is pleasant to explore.
Akbar Mausoleum History
Akbar’s Tomb is the mausoleum of the third and greatest Mughal emperor, Akbar, built of red sandstone and marble. The construction of Akbar’s Tomb began in 1605, commissioned by Akbar, and later (1613) completed by his son Jahangir.
The complex is a perfect blend of various architectural styles. There are four beautiful three-storey white marble minarets, similar to the Taj Mahal. The interior walls and ceilings are decorated with geometric patterns, exquisite calligraphy, and floral motifs.
How to Get to the Tomb of Akbar
The tomb complex is located on the Delhi-Agra highway and is surrounded by a well-maintained vast garden. This is a great place to spend a few peaceful hours if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
You can get to Akbar’s Tomb by taxi, Uber, or private transfer. The nearest metro station is Sikandra metro station. Locals can easily reach Sikandra by bus from Agra City or Bhagwan Talkies.
Most organized tours don’t include this attraction. In our opinion, the best way to visit the Tomb of Akbar is to book a private driver with a guide at your accommodation and explore the hidden gems of Agra. You can easily combine your visit with the underrated Red Taj and the beautiful Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj).
There is no dress code, but you should wear respectful clothing when visiting the mausoleum. Women must cover their shoulders and knees. You must take off your shoes before entering the mausoleum.
Akbar’s Tomb Sikandra Opening Hours & Entry Fee
The entrance fee is 310 INR (3,65 USD) for foreigners and 30 INR (0,35 USD) for Indians and citizens of SAARC/BIMSTEC countries. There is no entry fee for children under 15 (Indian and foreign). The tomb is open daily from sunrise to sunset, usually from 6 AM to 6 PM.
You can buy your ticket at the entrance or on the official website.
Where to Stay in Agra
Agra has some luxury hotels, but accommodation options are available for all budgets. We spent 3 nights at Ekaa Villa, which was a good base for exploring Agra’s attractions. But for the best experience, book accommodation with a view of the Taj Mahal. These are our recommendations.
Best Hotels with Taj Mahal View
- Luxury: The Oberoi Amarvilas
- Mid-Range: Tajview Agra or Taj Hotel & Convention Centre
- Budget: Radisson Hotel
