Best Time to Visit Jaipur

The best time to visit Jaipur is from November to March when the weather is more pleasant during the day. This is the perfect time to explore the famous Pink City without the discomfort of extreme heat or humidity.

The busiest period in India is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!

We visited Nahargarh Fort at the end of March and had fantastic weather. Although it’s a popular sunset viewpoint in the city, you don’t need to arrive hours early to get the best spot.

Nahargarh Fort History

The fort is located on the outskirts of Jaipur, perched on the majestic Aravalli hills. It is famous for its breathtaking sunset views of the city. Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a place of retreat and later expanded in 1868.

It was one of the three forts that formed a line of defense around the city, including Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort. The fortress was a place of residence and refuge for the people during the invasion.

According to the legend, the fort was haunted by a prince named Nahar Singh Bhomia, who obstructed construction and haunted the area. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built a temple to offer peace to the spirit, hence the name Nahargarh (which means “Abode of Tigers”).

Did you know that the fort was never attacked?

When visiting the fort, you can see the stunning Madhavendra Bhawan (two-storied palace), Wax museum, Sculpture park, Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), and the stepwell. Then, combine your visit with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort.

To learn more about the history of the fort or Jaipur, hire a local guide at the entrance.

The best way to get to the fort is by taxi or tuk-tuk. Most guided city tours do not include this attraction. If you want to get to the fort from the city, a tuk-tuk will cost around 400-800 rupees (5-10 USD) for a round trip, including waiting time.

You have probably seen many photos on Instagram of people walking or sitting on the fort’s ramparts. We also tried to climb the fortress wall but didn’t feel safe, so we didn’t go up. You can walk on the ramparts at your own risk! But remember, no picture is worth risking your safety or your life.

Are you hungry? Padao Restaurant is a great place to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the city.

Nahargarh Fort Entry Fee & Timings

At the time of our visit, the fort was open from 10 AM to 9:30 PM.

How to Get to Nahargarh Fort without a taxi or tuk-tuk

You can also walk directly from the city if you have enough time. First, take an Uber or tuk-tuk to the cobbled road at the bottom of the fort, next to the Nahargarh Palace Hotel.

We arrived from the City Palace for 100 rupees (1,20 USD). Once you arrive, you can walk up a steep, winding road to the fort, which takes about 30 minutes.

If you don’t want to walk up there, some locals will take you up to the top on their motorbikes for a few 100 rupees. This is the cheapest way to get to the fort.

The road to Nahargarh also leads to Jaigarh Fort. If you plan to visit all three forts (including the Amber Fort), we recommend hiring a tuk-tuk driver and allowing at least 4-5 hours to explore.
