Our Story

First of all, welcome, and thank you for reading our blog! We’re glad you’re here and want to learn more about us.

We are Dittus and Máté, a travel couple from Hungary, and Hungariandreamers is our travel blog. We’ve always wanted to travel, discover incredible places, learn about different cultures, meet new people, and try the national dishes of other countries.

“It’s better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.”

Why have we become travel addicts?

In previous years, we rarely traveled, and none of us had been on holiday abroad with our parents. In fact, we only went to Croatia together and later moved to Austria. We lived and worked in Austria for a few years. Working abroad was a fantastic opportunity for us to earn money, but we spent so much time abroad that we didn’t know what we wanted to do. We felt like we were in a rat race.

So when we were on the verge of burnout, Máté had a crazy idea to go backpacking around Southeast Asia. As we were young and wanted to experience freedom, we quit our jobs. We finally decided to make one of our dreams come true! Then, we started our first big trip together in November 2018.

Our first travel experience

We were very excited as we had never been outside Europe before and this was our first big trip. We started our trip in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and from there, we continued our journey to the bucket list countries.

We’ve motorcycled through the chaotic traffic of Vietnam, visited the magnificent temples of Thailand, took island hopping tours in the Philippines, explored the world’s largest religious monument in Cambodia, and experienced Balinese culture in Indonesia. We spent less than 50 USD a day per person because we used public transport and stayed in hostels.

On this 6-month Southeast Asia trip, Máté fell in love with photography, and we both became travel addicts! We had wonderful experiences and memories and wanted to see more of the world. But when we came home, we didn’t have more money to travel, so we had to return to work abroad. We planned to save money and travel the world again as soon as possible. We took weekend trips, worked a lot of overtime, and saved up our days off and money to go on longer trips.

Switzerland and the Dolomites were close to us, so we often went there on weekends. On these days, we hiked in the mountains, enjoyed the breathtaking views, and visited the beautiful alpine lakes. Then, we had an epic two-week trip to Italy, where we visited the Colosseum of Rome, explored the Amalfi Coast, walked around Venice, and tried heavenly Italian food. One of our unforgettable travel experiences was when we got engaged in Tuscany, Italy.

During Lockdown

Then came Covid-19, which ruined our future travel plans, as our flight to Iceland was canceled, and we were stuck out abroad. We were also only able to visit Hungary rarely during this period. Máté worked for a metal company, and Dittus worked for a packaging company. Fortunately, our jobs were kept during Covid-19. But Máté’s working hours were reduced, and he could only work every second week, therefore we could save less money together. So, we decided to spend the lockdown in a useful way. Then, we launched our travel blog in May 2020.

We had been writing blog posts in Hungarian for more than 1 year but had few readers. When we almost gave up, we tried a new target audience instead. So, we started writing new posts in English and rewriting previous posts. Since we had limited time to blog while working and were learning English at the same time, it was slow progress. Although it wasn’t easy to start all over again, it was worth the effort. Because a few months later, our readers increased, which motivated us to reach the next goal. So we decided to quit our jobs, and no matter how long it took, we would reach our dream of becoming full-time travel bloggers and content creators.

Latin America Trip

Then, in April 2022, we went on a more than 2-month trip to Latin America, visiting Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru. Machu Picchu had been on our bucket list for a long time, and it was a fantastic experience to see the Inca Ruins at sunrise. Mexico has become one of our favorite countries for its Maja culture, Mexican food, and beautiful sights. We had an unforgettable experience in Costa Rica. We saw wild sloths and animals, visited breathtaking waterfalls, and chilled out on untouched beaches.

Home Renovation

After we flew back home, we started renovating Máté’s old family house, and until it was ready, we moved to Dittus’s mom’s house. During the home renovation, we could save money by doing many things without a professional construction workers, like concrete, flooring, drywall, painting, etc. So the house renovation hasn’t been finished since then (probably won’t be completed in the next couple of years), but at least we can always come home to a place we call home. When we could we moved in and worked on building our website.

Many people think it takes a lot of money to travel. In fact, we have been to over 20 countries and spend never more than 50 USD per day per person. Use our detailed travel guides to get the most out of your travels and our tips to help you save money on your trips.

During our next trip to Asia, which started in March 2023, we had the opportunity to work with hotels and companies. This was a fantastic chance to finally show them what we can provide.

At the moment

We’re now working from home, building our website, and looking forward to sharing our travel experiences and tips from the countries we’ve visited. One of our biggest goals is to become inspiring travelers who show you that you don’t have to sell anything to travel the world.

Honestly, it’s not easy to be together 24 hours a day and find a balance between working together and being a couple (we’re still working on that). But we believe that together, we can reach all our goals, no matter how much time, money, and energy we have to invest.
