Our Review of Mathis Retreat Ubud Hotel

Where is Mathis Retreat Ubud?

The Mathis Retreat Ubud Hotel is located just 10 minutes from the center of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia.

How to Get to Mathis Retreat Ubud?

There are several ways to get there. We recommend catching a taxi or using Gojek to get to the hotel. But the most comfortable way is to hire a private driver.

The distance between Ubud and Denpasar International Airport (airport code DPS) is only 40 km, and the journey takes 1-2 hours, depending on traffic.

Arrive at Mathis Retreat Ubud

After arriving at the boutique hotel, we were welcomed at reception by a friendly staff. We were then given information about the hotel’s facilities, the shuttle schedules between Ubud and the hotel, the restaurant opening hours, yoga classes, and spa services.

Then, we checked in and were given some chilled towels and a delicious welcome drink at the Terracotta restaurant. Then, the staff took care of our luggage, guided us around the hotel, and showed us our beautiful Garden Bungalow.

We decided to spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool. Then, in the evening, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner at the Terracotta Restaurant Ubud overlooking the rice terraces.

In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation in advance!

Our Garden Bungalow

Our bungalow was beautiful, and we loved it! The garden bungalow has a 72 sqm room with a comfortable king size bed, a wardrobe, plus a sofa that can be converted into an extra bed. In addition, a lovely bathroom is included in the room with a bathtub, two washbasins, an independent shower, and a separate toilet.

We loved sitting on the terrace, talking and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and view of the private garden.

All bookings at Mathis Retreat Ubud include a daily breakfast from 7 AM to 10:30 AM.

We loved the peaceful atmosphere, the delicious food, and the beautiful view at breakfast.

TIP
After breakfast, walk through the rice fields and see the cute geese.

Dining Experiences

The staff in the restaurant was very friendly, happy to help us, and suggested great food and desserts from the menu.

We couldn’t pick just one favorite dish as they were all delicious. So we suggest you forget your diet there and try all the desserts on the menu.

Whatever you choose from the menu, you won’t be disappointed, but these are a must-try. Delicious vegetarian dishes are also available.

  • Fish two ways (Pan-seared sesame seed mahi-mahi and steamed snapper stuffed with seasonal fruits, sautéed Asian green vegetables on lemongrass rice.)
  • Mahi-mahi Balinese pesto (Grilled mahi-mahi wrapped with linguini toast, baby herbs, red chili, sesame oil, and Balinese “kemangi” candlenut pesto and ginger flower relish.)
  • Gnocchi (With mushroom and cream, parmesan sauce.)
  • Caesar salad (Smashed avocado on sourdough toast, feta cheese, and sesame seed.)
  • Mathis treat bowl (Cauliflower, tomato salsa, smashed avocado, baby romaine, pulled jack fruit, tofu, tempe, and house dressing.)
  • Banana flambée (Caramelized banana, cashew nut in sugar syrup, chocolate sauce with papaya, and strawberry salad.)
  • Fondant au chocolat (Warm chocolate fondant served with raspberry sauce and caramel gelato.)

Even if you’re not a guest at the hotel, it’s still worth eating at the restaurant, believe us, you won’t regret it! The restaurant is open every day from 7 AM to 11 PM.

TIP
You can also book a floating breakfast, a romantic candlelight dinner, or join a Balinese private cooking class.
