For visitors, the Stoos ridgeline hike is a lesser-known destination. However, it is one of Central Switzerland’s most picturesque hiking trails. The hike is located in the car-free mountain village of Stoos, and there is a beautiful panorama walking trail along the ridge. You can visit it as a day trip from Zurich or Lucerne, and easily combine it with other nearby attractions. The best part of the hike is that you can ride with the world’s steepest funicular railroad (110% gradient), and afterward, you can do an easy, moderate hike. How to Get to Stoos?

Stoos is a car-free mountain village in Central Switzerland, about 45 minutes from Lucerne and 1 hour from Zurich. As Stoos is not accessible by car, you can reach Stoos from Morschach by cable car or Schwyz funicular.

The best way to go to Stoos, in our opinion, is to take the world’s steepest funicular railroad from the Schwyz cable car station.

The Schwyz-Stoos cable car station is easily accessible by car or bus.
– By car: If you arrive by car, there are many paid parking spaces available. There is also a parking garage and an outdoor car park next to the funicular.
The first hour is free and costs 1 CHF each hour. 13 CHF for 12 to 24 hours, 19.50 CHF for two days. From 7 PM to 7 AM, the parking is free of charge.
– By public transport: Travel to Schwyz train station, and from there you can take bus 501 to the cable car station.

Stoos funicular railway

After boarding the funicular, stand close to the window and enjoy the fantastic view.

The ticket includes the world’s steepest funicular railroad and the use of two chair lifts. Adults CHF 48, children aged 6-15 CHF 20, and children under 6-years free.

The funicular runs every 30 minutes between 7.10 AM and 7.40 PM. On Fridays and Saturdays, it runs until 11.40 PM.
The chair lifts are available nonstop from 9 AM to 4 PM, with longer operating times on Saturdays.

From Stoos to Klingenstock

We reached the mountain village of Stoos in just 7 minutes on the world’s steepest funicular railroad. The ridge trail between Klingenstock and Fronalpstock starts and ends in Stoos.

There are two ways to do the Stoos Ridgeline Hike. From Klingenstock to Fronalpstock or from Fronalpstock to Klingenstock.
In our opinion, the best way to hike is from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock. The views get crazier as you hike up the ridge, and arriving at the beautiful lookout of Fronalpstock after the hike is a great reward.

The best time for hiking is from June to September.

Once you arrive in Stoos, it’s a short walk to the Klingenstock chairlift, which takes you up 1935 m. Follow the signs to the left for Sesselbahn Klingenstock, Talstation. The price includes the chairlift, but be careful not to lose your ticket. The chair lift ride takes about 15 minutes. After arriving you can use the toilets next to the cable car. Then follow the signs to Fronalpstock.

From Klingenstock to Fronalpstock

The path is well-built and not too narrow. You should wear suitable shoes and follow the marked trail, and you can easily do this trek.

We went to Stoos on a summer weekend, and there were huge crowds on the ridge. Take more time on the hike because the view is beautiful, and you’ll want to stop and take photos every time. Sometimes it is worth looking back, as it gives the landscape a different perspective.

The hike from Klingenstock to Fronalpstock is 4,5 km and takes about 2-3 hours. The hike was easy and moderate for us, with a few ascents and lots of stairs.

The “Stairways to Heaven” are the most beautiful panoramic views of the hike, located just before the Furgelli-Hütte.

Another option: When you want to get to this fantastic viewpoint faster, you can hike from Fronalpstock to Klingenstock. Once you arrive in Stoos, walk to the Fronalpstock chairlift, which is 10 minutes away, and after about 40 minutes of hiking, you can enjoy the breathtaking view.

On arrival in Fronalpstock, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the lakes and the nearby alpine mountains. There is a large playground for the kids and a great restaurant where you can relax.

Afterward, take a chairlift back to Stoos and then take time to explore the local village. There is a super cute church from which you can take a great photo or enjoy the charming atmosphere of Stoos.
