Best Time to Visit Jodhpur
The best time to visit Jodhpur is during the cooler months, from November to March when the weather is more pleasant during the day.
We visited Jodhpur Stepwell at the end of March and had fantastic weather. Although it’s still a hidden gem in Jodhpur, we recommend visiting early in the morning as many locals like to hang out or jump into the water here.
The busiest period in India is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!
Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi History
Following an ancient tradition, the ladies of the royal families built step wells. Stepwells are also known as baori, baoli, vav, or bavdi. There are about 3,000 ancient stepwells in India.
These stepwells were built to store rainwater and provide a year-round water supply (especially during droughts). The wells have steps built into the sides that lead down to the water.
Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi was built in 1740 AD by a queen of Marwar Rani Tanwar Ji, consort of Maharaja Abhay Singh of Jodhpur. It was carved from Jodhpur’s characteristic rose-red sandstone and is more than 200 feet deep. The walls of the step well are decorated with carvings of dancing elephants, medieval lions, and cows.
It was submerged for over a century, and subsequent restoration uncovered two hundred feet of hand-carved structure.
The stepwell was part of the city’s water catchment system. The technology of Persian wheels was used to raise the water to higher levels. A pair of oxen were used to turn the wheels from the platform above, and then the water rose to different levels.
It also served as a community gathering place. Three centuries later, it still serves as a local water service.
TIP
Agrasen Ki Baoli, Chand Baori, and Panna Meena ka Kund are also worth a visit.
How to Get to Jodhpur Stepwell
It is easily accessible, only a 5-minute walk from the iconic Clock Tower. The road to Stepwell leads through a busy marketplace with narrow streets, so if you’re arriving by car, there’s no parking in the area.

The stepwell is free to visit and open to visitors throughout the day.
We recommend visiting the stepwell between October and March, as the steps may be hidden by the water level if you visit during the rainy season.
