Handara Gate

Where is Handara Gate in Bali?

It is located in the Pancasari village, Bedugul, just 17 km from Munduk, close to the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. Easy to find, follow the JI. Raya Singaraja-Denpasar main road, and turn right when you see this huge gate.

Here is the location of the Handara Gate.

Handara Gate History

This place has no real historical significance. Handara Golf & Resort Bali opened in 1976. The stunning 18-hole golf course was designed by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson.

It was the first golf course in Bali, and the gate was built as the entrance to the resort. The gate is a symbol of Bali’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Good to know
You can only enter the golf course area if you have a reservation or are staying at the resort.

Best Time to Visit Bali, Indonesia

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. Bali is a popular destination all year round! But the best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, from April to October. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!

Bali has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather, and the average temperature is around 27°C all year round. The rainy season runs from November to March. We visited the iconic Bali Gate in mid-May and had fantastic weather.

Before you visit this popular tourist attraction, check the weather forecast, as the weather in the highlands of North Bali is often unpredictable, and fog/rain can obscure the view.

How to Get to the Iconic Bali Gate

The gate is not accessible by public transport. It is about a 30-minute drive from Munduk and 1.5 hours from Ubud and Canggu. You can easily get to the gate by scooter. Parking is free. Alternatively, you can rent a private car with a driver or join a guided tour that includes transport.

Rent a private car with a driver to easily explore Bali’s attractions through Viator or GetYourGuide.

We rented a scooter and explored Ubud and Munduk at our own pace. Scooter rental starts from 80,000 IDR (5 USD) per day. If you rent a scooter for several days, ask for a discount. Traffic in Bali is chaotic, so always wear a helmet and don’t drive at night!

Handara Gate Tour

The best and most comfortable way to visit this famous stone gate is to join an organized group or private tour, which includes transport and other great attractions.

See some of Bali’s most photogenic spots like Lake Beratan, Wanagiri Hidden Hill, Banyumala Twin Waterfall, and Sekumpul Waterfall.

Book your private tour via Viator or GetYourGuide.

How to Visit Bali Handara Gate

Although there are many gates in Bali, this is one of the most photographed places. If you want to avoid the crowds, arrive early in the morning. During the day, the line can be insanely long. Once you arrive, the gate is only a short walk from the ticket counter.

Get your photo/drone ticket before queuing. There is a queuing area where you have to wait. The staff will say the next queue number, and when it’s your turn, you can take a photo. Each person is only allowed 2-3 minutes to take photos. Vehicles enter and leave the resort, so be careful when taking pictures/videos!

Since you will only have a short time to take photos, you should plan which pictures and poses you want to capture. Wear a brightly colored dress for the perfect Instagram photo. Then, visit the beautiful Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Lake Beratan), just a 5-minute drive away.

Handara Gate Opening Hours

There are no official opening hours as this is just a gate to enter the golf club, so you can visit it 24 hours a day. The ticket counter is usually open from 6 AM to 6 PM, but hours may vary.

Handara Gate Entrance Fee

A ‘Selfie Ticket’ costs 50,000 IDR (3 USD) per person in 2024 and only allows 2-3 minutes to take photos. You must pay 200,000 IDR (13 USD) to use your drone. You can’t pay by card, so bring enough cash!

If you need staff assistance to take photos, you will have to pay an additional 10,000 IDR (0.65 USD).

Good to know
They don’t offer refunds, so check how long you have to wait in line before buying your ticket.

Handara Gate vs Gate of Heaven (Lempuyang Temple)

Are you spending limited time in Bali and can’t decide which attractions to visit? There are usually long queues at both gates, and you will have to wait to take photos. We enjoyed visiting both sights.

But in our opinion, the Lempuyang Temple is a much better choice. There are more attractions/temples and more photo opportunities than the entrance to Handara Golf & Resort.

However, this temple is more difficult to reach and is about a 3-hour drive from Munduk. Another downside is that the entrance fee to Lempuyang Temple is 100,000 IDR (6.5 USD) per person, and you may have to queue for hours for a photo.

For the best experience, stay at Handara Golf & Resort Bali. Ubud has many luxury hotels, but accommodation options are available for all budgets. Alternatively, stay in Munduk. These are our recommendations.
