Things to do in Jaipur

Where is Jaipur?

Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is the capital and largest city of the state of Rajasthan in northwestern India. It was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Best Time to Visit Jaipur

The best time to visit Jaipur is from November to March when the weather is more pleasant during the day. This is the perfect time to explore the famous Pink City without the discomfort of extreme heat or humidity.

The hottest months are May and June when temperatures rise above 40°C.

The busiest period in India is from October to March. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, train tickets, and tours in advance!

We visited Jaipur at the end of March and had fantastic weather.

What to do in Jaipur

How to Get to Jaipur

The easiest and fastest way to get to Jaipur is by plane. Most people fly from the UAE, New Delhi, or Mumbai. The distance between Jaipur airport and the Pink City is only 12 km and can be reached in about 30-40 minutes by taxi.

TIP
Use Skyscanner to get cheap flights.

We have no experience with buses in India as we have only traveled by train, but we think they can be very slow.

Alternatively, you can book a private transfer from Delhi or Agra.

What to see in Jaipur

We arrived in Jaipur from Agra by train and found it safe. Here is the official site where you can buy train tickets in India. But we couldn’t use it even with an Indian phone number.

The cheapest train tickets start from 4 USD, and the journey usually takes 4-5 hours from Agra. However, for your convenience and safety, we recommend booking AC first-class or second-class train tickets, which cost around 13-20 USD.

Get your train tickets via 12Go.

Once you arrive at the train station, you can easily find a tuk-tuk driver who will take you to your accommodation.

Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is an iconic landmark of Jaipur. It was built of red and pink sandstone. This stunning architectural gem is a must-see for anyone visiting the Pink City. This five-story pyramid-shaped structure was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh.

It has 953 small windows decorated with intricate latticework. The main purpose of building the palace was that through the windows, the royal women could watch the busy streets and festivals without being seen by others.

It is open every day from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. The entrance fee to the Hawa Mahal is 50 INR (0,60 USD) for Indians and 200 INR (2,30 USD) for foreigners.

For the best view, go upstairs to the Tattoo Cafe & Lounge opposite the building. The Tatto Cafe entry fee is 250 rupees, which will be deducted from the bill after consumption.

Wondering what to see in Jaipur if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet place? Gatore Ki Chhatriyan, also known as Royal Gaitor, is a stunning hidden gem. We loved exploring it!

Nestled among Aravalli hills, the historic site has intricately carved marble and sandstone domes that serve as royal memorials. Its stunning architecture provides a beautiful location for photography. It is only a few kilometers from the bustling city center, so we recommend you visit it.

Is Jaipur Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or a photography fan, the Pink City is the perfect destination for your next trip to India.

Why is Jaipur called the ”Pink City”?

Jaipur became known as the Pink City when in 1876, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh I ordered the entire city to be painted pink (as a symbol of hospitality) to welcome Queen Victoria and her son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. It’s said that Prince Albert nicknamed Jaipur the Pink City and the name stuck.

The Walled City of Jaipur was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

Is it Safe to Travel to Jaipur?

Yes, it is generally safe for tourists. But small thefts and pickpockets can happen everywhere. So always take care of your valuables!

If you don’t want an upset stomach, don’t eat on the street and avoid eating meat in India. In addition, it is not safe to drink from the tap. The Grayl Water Bottle filter removes viruses and bacteria and filters microplastics, chemicals, and heavy metals. Fill up your filtered water bottle anywhere and drink crystal-clear water wherever you go.

The locals were very friendly and helpful.

How many Days do you Need in Jaipur?

Most people visit Jaipur on a multi-day Golden Triangle tour and spend just 1 day exploring the city. This is enough time to see the main attractions, but if you want to explore the Pink City at a leisurely pace, plan a longer stay.
