Sekumpul Waterfall

Where is Sekumpul Waterfall?

Sekumpul Waterfall, also known as Air Terjun Sekumpul, is located in North Bali, Indonesia, approximately 30 km from Munduk and 70 km from Ubud.

Best Time to Visit Munduk, Bali

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. Bali is a popular destination all year round! But the best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, from April to October. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions. In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!

Bali has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather, and the average temperature is around 27°C all year round. The rainy season runs from November to March.

The waterfall is the most beautiful in the rainy season because it is powerful and intense. However, during the wet season, the hiking trail is dangerous, so we don’t recommend a visit these months.

We visited Air Terjun Sekumpul in mid-May and had fantastic weather.

How to Get to Sekumpul Waterfall & Parking

To get to the waterfall, you first need to get to Bali Island in Indonesia. The waterfall is not accessible by public transport. It is about a 1-hour drive from Munduk, 1.5 hours from Gretek, and 2.5 hours from Ubud.

You can rent a private car with a driver or join a guided tour that includes transport. Alternatively, you can easily get to the waterfall by scooter. Parking is usually free, but if you have to pay, don’t pay more than 5,000 IDR (0.35 USD). Once you arrive, buy your entrance ticket and visit the waterfall.

Rent a private car with a driver to easily explore Bali’s attractions through Viator or GetYourGuide.

We rented a scooter and explored Munduk at our own pace. Scooter rental starts from 80,000 IDR (5 USD) per day. If you rent a scooter for several days, ask for a discount. Traffic in Bali is chaotic, so always wear a helmet and don’t drive at night!

Don’t forget to buy travel insurance! We always choose SafetyWing for our travels.

Sekumpul Waterfall Hike

The waterfall is situated in the middle of the lush tropical jungle and offers breathtaking scenery. Although it is a popular tourist destination, most people only visit the viewing platform and do not hike to the waterfall. The viewing platform offers fantastic photo opportunities but get there early as it can get crowded. From there, you can also see the Fiji Waterfall.

There is a checkpoint after the viewpoint, so if you don’t have the right ticket or card, unfortunately, you can’t continue to the waterfall. If you like epic places and hiking in nature, we strongly recommend you choose the long trek, which gives you access to all the waterfalls. However, we did the short hike and skipped the Fiji Waterfall.

As we stayed in a nearby accommodation, the entrance to the waterfall was only a 15-minute walk away. An easy paved path leads to the waterfall viewpoint. The viewing platform is just 10 minutes from the entrance.

After you have taken enough photos, head down the stairs to the base of the falls. The path is easy to follow, and you can’t get lost. The waterfall can be reached from the viewpoint in about 20-25 minutes.

Sekumpul Waterfall hike

There are some viewpoints along the way where you can also take beautiful photos and find places to rest. We recommend visiting the stunning Hidden Waterfall first.

Hidden Waterfall

From Hidden Waterfall, the path takes you through the powerful stream before reaching the base of Sekumpul Falls. The Sekumpul Waterfall is an impressive twin waterfall, about 80 meters high, and the highest waterfall in Bali. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the breathtaking view and swim in the pool below the waterfall.

Use a polarized lens to protect your camera and get better-quality photos.

This was an easy, moderate hike, and the most challenging part was the stairs on the way back. You can reach the parking lot in about 30-40 minutes. The trail is well maintained by the locals, and there are a few warungs at the trailhead where you can rest after your hike.

The entire hike takes about 3-4 hours, including photo stops and breaks.

Waterfall Opening Hours

The official opening hours are from 7 AM to 5 PM, but technically, the waterfall is open 24 hours a day.

Sekumpul Waterfall Entrance Fee & Tickets

There are 3 options to visit the waterfall. (It only depends on your time and budget).

  • View Only: The entrance fee to the waterfall viewpoint is just 20,000 IDR (1.3 USD) per person. However, the entrance fee only allows tourists to enjoy the view from above, and they cannot hike to the waterfall. Many people choose this option, but we recommend the medium trek.
  • Medium Tracking: This package costs 150,000 IDR (10 USD) per person and includes the entrance ticket, village donation, and a visit to Sekumpul and Hidden Waterfall with a local guide.
  • Long Tracking: This package costs 250,000 IDR (16.5 USD) per person and includes the entrance ticket, mineral water, donation to the village, and a visit to Twin, Hidden, and Fiji Waterfall with a local guide.

Sekumpul Waterfall Registration Scam

If you search on Google Maps, you will find many parking lots and waterfall entrances. This is because there are many fake registration checkpoints where locals try to trick tourists into buying overpriced tickets!

A small group of locals made these fake checkpoints very credible. So if you see the fake Sekumpul registration signs or locals waving you to stop, ignore them and just keep driving. They will say that it is dangerous to visit the waterfall, you need an experienced guide, and they want to sell you overpriced tickets for 400,000-600,000 IDR (26.5-40 USD).

In fact, we did the medium trek ourselves without a tour guide.

How to Avoid the Sekumpul Waterfall Scam?

These are three options if you want to avoid tourist scams.

1. Get a Discount Ticket

Looking for the cheapest way to visit the waterfall? Then, book accommodation in Sekumpul village. If you stay at Sekumpul BnB, you can get a discounted ticket for 70,000 IDR (4.65 USD), which includes the viewpoint and the short trek. But if you stay at Sugi Gede Homestay, you can get an even cheaper ticket for just 30,000 IDR (2 USD).

We found these two accommodations that are currently offering discounted tickets to Sekumpul. But there are probably more in the area. If you know of another accommodation, let us know in the comments, and we will update the post.

2. Join a Sekumpul Waterfall Tour

Book an organized tour and avoid unnecessary stressful situations. The best and most comfortable way to visit the waterfall is to join a group or private tour, which includes transport and other great attractions. The tour price includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, transport by air-conditioned car, an English-speaking tour guide, and entrance fees.

Book your waterfall tour via Viator or GetYourGuide.

3. Secret Access to Sekumpul Falls

You cannot use the official entrance as you will be stopped there, and you will have to pay for a guide if you want to do a hike. Alternatively, you can drive to the Warung Fiji restaurant (south entrance to the waterfall), park your scooter there, and visit the waterfalls without a guide for just 20,0000 IDR (1.3 USD). Many people used to get to the waterfall this way, but we don’t know if it is still possible.
