Where is Tamblingan Lake Temple?

Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan is located on the edge of Lake Tamblingan in Munduk, Bali.

How to Get to Tamblingan Lake

It is about a 20-minute drive from Munduk Village and 2 hours from Ubud. You can easily get to the lake by scooter. Parking is free. Alternatively, you can rent a private car with a driver or join a guided tour that includes transport.

Book this excellent Munduk Waterfalls Trek, Twin Lakes & Temple Tour, which includes hotel pickup and drop-off, entry tickets, a trekking guide, a 30-minute canoe ride, and a visit to Banyumala Waterfall.

We rented a scooter and explored Ubud and Munduk at our own pace. Scooter rental starts from 80,000 IDR (5 USD) per day. If you rent a scooter for several days, ask for a discount. Traffic in Bali is chaotic, so always wear a helmet and don’t drive at night!

Best Time to Visit Munduk, Bali

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring the best attractions.

Bali has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather, and the average temperature is around 27°C all year round. The rainy season runs from November to March.

Before you visit this attraction, check the weather forecast, as the weather in the highlands of North Bali is often unpredictable. We visited Tamblingan Lake in May and enjoyed the fantastic scenery. The weather was very cool in the morning, so we recommend bringing a sweater or a light jacket.

You don’t have to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds, as this place is not yet very popular with tourists. But we think the best time to visit the lake is at sunrise. You can easily take the best photos in the morning and enjoy the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the place.

Tamblingan Lake Temple

Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan is an ancient 10th-century temple built in the middle of a volcanic caldera. The temple is dedicated to the goddess of the lake, Dewi Danu.

Surrounded by lush green forests and misty hills, it’s an ideal place to watch the sunrise and sunset. The lake’s calm atmosphere and clear waters attract visitors, but it’s not as crowded as other nearby attractions. We were lucky because there were no other tourists when we visited, just a few fishermen and campers.

You can rent a canoe at Tamblingan Lake, enjoy breathtaking views of the temple, and take unique photos.

TIP
If you have a drone, bring it with you because the views from above are stunningly beautiful.

Tamblingan Lake photos

During the rainy season, when the water level is high, the temple looks like it is floating on the lake. When the water is low, you can easily walk to the temple, which makes the experience even more fantastic.

There is a small stall where you can buy refreshments and snacks.

We recommend visiting the temple in the morning and then heading to Banyumala Twin Waterfall or Munduk Waterfalls. The lake is also very close to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Lake Beratan) and Handara Gate, which you can also visit.

Tamblingan Lake Camp

The lake is an ideal place for camping with friends and family. If you want to go camping, we recommend choosing a sunny and dry day, as during the rainy season or after a lot of rain, the water in the lake can rise, and the ground will be muddy everywhere.

If you are camping, please keep the area clean and do not litter.

Tamblingan Lake Entrance Fee & Opening Hours

It is open 24 hours a day. The entrance fee is 30,000 IDR (about 2 USD) for foreigners and 10,000 IDR for locals, which includes parking and access to the temple and the lake. Bring enough local money with you, as you can only pay in cash.
