It is only a 15-minute ferry ride from Gozo and 25 minutes from Malta. Our favorite attraction was the beautiful Blue Lagoon, which boasts white sand and breathtaking turquoise water. Make the most of your visit and catch the first boat to the island, and explore the best attractions at your own pace.

Best things to do in Comino Island
With its crystal clear waters and breathtaking views, the island of Comino is one of the most beautiful places in Malta. The perfect place to relax and explore the island’s natural beauty. Although the island itself is small, it offers plenty to do, whether you want to swim in the crystal clear waters, scuba dive, snorkel, or take a boat trip to the nearby caves.
1. Comino Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon offers exciting activities, such as jet ski and canoe rentals, as well as fun banana boat rides. There are two smaller sandy beaches here, the first of which is where the boats and ferries from Malta arrive. This beach is very small, fills up quickly, and you can’t rent sun loungers, so we don’t recommend staying here.
There is another smaller sandy beach nearby where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. However, it was very crowded at the time of our visit, and there was limited space on the beach due to the many sunbeds. We also rented a sunbed with an umbrella here, the price was 15 EUR per person for the whole day.
If you spend a lot of time here, it is worth renting a sun lounger, as the ground is rocky everywhere and there is no shade. From here, you can swim to the opposite Cominotto Beach (about 150 m), but we only recommend it if you can swim well. You can also get to Cominotto Beach by water taxi for 5 EUR per person.

Blue Lagoon Registration
From 1 May 2025, a new online visitor booking system will regulate the number of visitors at the Comino’s Blue Lagoon to avoid overcrowding and protect and preserve the lagoon’s environment and its delicate ecosystems.
You will need to select a date and book one of the three available time slots per day.
- 08:00-13.30
- 13:30-17:30
- 17:30-22:00
After entering your basic details, you will receive a free QR code via email that you must present before disembarking. Upon arrival, you will receive a wristband that grants you access to the Blue Lagoon for the specified duration.
You can reserve your place via the blcomino website.
2. Take a Photo with a Pineapple Cocktail
Wondering what to do in Comino? Buy a pineapple cocktail at the Fruit Bar and enjoy the stunning views, and take some great photos. The pineapple cocktail costs 10 EUR, but you can get a refill for 5 EUR.
There are public toilets and food stalls in the area where you can buy light snacks, hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, and ice cream. There are also lockers where you can safely store your belongings while you explore the island’s hidden gems or swim in the lagoon. Small lockers cost 5 EUR and large lockers cost 7 EUR.
There is a rocky beach north of the bar where there are fewer people, and you can enjoy relaxing. We took our favorite pictures with pineapples at this beach.
If you visit the island not on your own, but during a tour, you can enjoy sliding from the ferries into the crystal clear water.
3. Crystal Lagoon
One of the best things to do in Comino is to visit the Crystal Lagoon. The lagoon is a beautiful place with sparkling turquoise water and surrounded by rugged cliffs. A perfect place for cliff jumping, scuba diving, and exploring sea caves and rock formations.
Once you have explored and enjoyed your time at the Blue Lagoon, head to the Crystal Lagoon, which is about a 15-minute walk away. It is much quieter than the Blue Lagoon, and we really enjoyed the stunning views of the Santa Marija Tower and the surrounding landscape.
Although the beautiful water was inviting, the lagoon can only be accessed by boat, canoe, or jet ski, so unfortunately, we couldn’t swim in the water here.
Once you’ve taken enough pictures of the Crystal Lagoon, check out the nearby L-Ghar ta’ Bla Saqaf (collapsed limestone cave), which also offers great photo opportunities.
If you want to walk around the island, we recommend comfortable sneakers instead of flip-flops.
4. Santa Maria Bay
After the Crystal Lagoon, we visited Santa Maria Bay. But you can also walk there from the Blue Lagoon, which takes about 20-25 minutes. This sandy beach is much quieter than the main beach, as few people are willing to walk there.
You can’t rent umbrellas in the area, and there is little shade. We think it’s worth a visit for those who want to avoid the crowds, are looking for a quiet place, or those who come with their families. However, if you are only spending a few hours on Comino, consider skipping this beach.

5. Comino Cave Tour
If you buy your boat ticket at the Cirkewwa ferry terminal (like we did), the ticket also includes the free cave tour that you visit on the way there.
Good to know
Once you’re on the island, you can also book a cave tour from there for 15 EUR per person.

Where to Stay in Malta
There is only one hotel and a small campsite on the island of Comino. That’s why most people make a day trip here, and in our opinion, that’s enough time to discover the best sights.
Malta has many small towns to stay in, but most people stay in Sliema, Valletta, or Mellieha as a first visit.
- The Sliema area is one of the best choices if you are looking for affordable accommodation in Malta.
- Valletta is one of the most atmospheric places to stay. From here, you can easily reach Sliema by ferry or visit the Three Cities by Maltese gondola.
- Mellieha Bay is one of the largest sandy beaches and a favorite spot for families, couples, and water sports lovers.

Our honest review of the island of Comino
The island and the Blue Lagoon were truly beautiful, but incredibly crowded even in the off-season. In the high season, we can’t even imagine how many people there would be on the island.
Since the island is rocky, it will be quite uncomfortable to lie on the pebbles/ground for hours if you don’t rent a sun lounger. In our opinion, the sun loungers and chairs are expensive and too close together. Unfortunately, there is no shade anywhere, and the food and drinks on the island are overpriced.
What we liked most about Comino is that it offers fantastic photo opportunities. We think it’s worth visiting the island for a few hours or exploring the caves and lagoons with a small boat.
How to Get to the Comino Blue Lagoon
Between Malta and Gozo lies the small island of Comino, famous for its crystal clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and stunning Blue Lagoon. You can get to Comino from Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal (Malta) or Mgarr Harbour (Gozo). Most people take a day trip from Malta.
We arrived by car in Cirkewwa and parked for free. However, we recommend arriving as early as possible during high season, as parking spaces fill up quickly.
Important note
Do not park in a space reserved for divers, otherwise you will receive a fine of up to 140 EUR.
During our visit, the first boat left at 8:40 AM. You can check the current schedule here. The boat trip takes approximately 20-25 minutes each way. The round-trip ticket costs 15 EUR for adults and 7 EUR for children (under 10 years old).
If the parking spaces are full, go to the Marfa ferry port and take a boat from there.
By Bus to Cirkewwa
Depending on where you are in Malta, you can easily get to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal by bus. Below, you will find the most popular routes.
- Airport: Route TD1
- Sliema: Route 222
- Valletta: Route 41, 42, or X300
- Bugibba: Route 221
- Golden Bay: 101
The bus ticket costs 2.50 EUR in summer, 2 EUR in winter, and the night fare is 3 EUR. You can purchase your ticket from the bus driver. Tickets are valid for two hours, including transfers.
Save money and buy a Tallinja Card. The Explore Card costs 25 EUR for adults and 7 EUR for children (4-10 years old). It is valid for 7 days from the first validation and gives you unlimited travel.

You can buy your Tallinja Card at the airport’s ticket machines.

Best Time to Visit Comino Island, Malta
Malta is an all-year-round destination with beautiful beaches, historic sites, charming towns, and stunning natural attractions. But the best time to visit is from May to September. We explored Comino’s attractions in mid-May and had fantastic weather on the island.
Malta has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
Comino, especially the Blue Lagoon area, is busiest in July and August, making it difficult to enjoy the tranquility of this magical place, and you may not get a spot on the beach. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the low season.
