How to Get to Morocco

The Kingdom of Morocco, also known as Morocco, is a Muslim country in North Africa. The best way to travel to Morocco is by plane. Alternatively, you can travel by ferry from Spain.

Morocco has many airports, so depending on where you want to start your Morocco Itinerary, you can easily choose the one that suits you best.

Important note
Do not bring a drone. If you try to enter Morocco with a drone, customs will confiscate it at the airport.

Most travelers to Morocco arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport (airport code RAK) or Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (airport code CMN), as you can get cheap flights there.

Marrakech is the best place to start your 10-day Morocco Itinerary. There are many direct flights to Marrakech from the U.K., Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, and other international countries.

If you are already in Morocco, you can also take a short domestic flight from Casablanca, Tangier, Tetouan, or Fes to Marrakech.

Marrakech Menara Airport to City Center

The distance between Menara Airport and Marrakech city center is about 7 km, which is 20-40 minutes, depending on traffic and mode of transport.

You can easily get to the city center from the airport by taxi, bus, rental car, shared and private transfer. The cheapest way to get to Medina is by public bus.

How to Get Around Morocco on a 10-Day Itinerary?

Getting around in Morocco is easy. Here are the two most popular options.

By car

The best way to get around the country and see the most popular attractions is to rent a car and explore it at your own pace. Once you arrive at Marrakech Airport, you can easily rent a car at the airport or pick up your pre-booked car.

During our travels, we always use Discover Cars for car rentals.

The car rental costs will be different when you travel to Morocco in high season or low season and rent a car in advance or at the last minute. But you will spend around 15-20 USD daily for a standard car with full coverage. Book your car in advance to get the best price!

By public transport

The cheapest way to get around in Morocco is by bus. As bus tickets sell out quickly, we recommend you buy them days in advance! The CTM buses are affordable, comfortable, and safe.

The train is another great way to travel between cities in comfort. ONCF trains are clean, modern, safe, and comfortable. In addition, you can enjoy stunning views of the Moroccan countryside on the way. Save money and buy second-class train tickets. You can check the current timetable on the ONCF Voyages website. 

In addition, you can travel between cities in Grand taxis, private transfers, or join a multi-day tour that includes transfers.

Before you get in the taxi, be sure to agree on a price with the driver. Taxi drivers do not accept card payments, so you should bring local money (MAD) or EUR.

Best Time to Visit Morocco

Morocco is a popular destination all year round! But the best time to visit Morocco is spring (mid-March to May) and autumn (September to November). The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for sightseeing and exploring the nearby attractions.

Morocco has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The average annual temperature is 18°C. In summer, temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees, so we do not recommend a visit during the hottest months (July and August).

Winter usually starts in December and ends in March, with January being the coldest month. When we visited in March, the weather was quite cool, so bring a light jacket and jeans!

Before you visit Morocco, you should check when Ramadan starts. It usually begins in late February or early March and lasts for a month.

10-Day Morocco Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech, Morocco

Welcome to Morocco! We hope you had a great flight and are ready to explore this beautiful country. Marrakech is the best place to start your Morocco Itinerary, as there are many cheap and direct flights to Marrakech.

Depending on when you arrive in Marrakech, you can choose to start sightseeing or relax on your first day in Morocco. We arrived in Marrakech in the afternoon. So after checking into our hotel, we decided to go to the Jemaa el-Fna Square and spend the rest of the day exploring.

In the square, you’ll see street food stalls, monkey handlers, snake charmers, orange and fresh fruit juice stalls, street performers, dancers, and henna artists.

After wandering around the bustling square, watch the beautiful sunset from one of the best rooftop restaurants. Morocco is an Islamic country, and therefore, many bars and restaurants do not serve alcohol at all. We highly recommend you try these dishes, such as chicken pastilla, couscous, and vegetable tagine with fresh mint tea.

We recommend staying in the Medina of Marrakech, as most attractions will be within walking distance.

Day 2: Explore Marrakech

One of the best things to do on your Morocco Itinerary is to discover Marrakech, so spend this day sightseeing. We have a detailed guide to visiting Marrakech, including must-see attractions, popular rooftop restaurants, the best tours, and the top places to visit.

Marrakech is a very walkable city. In the narrow alleys of the walled Old Town (Medina), there are no cars, just mopeds, and donkey carts. Make the most of your visit and join a city tour, which includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, a local tour guide, and transportation by comfortable minivan.

During the tour, you can visit the Jardin Majorelle, Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech.

After sightseeing, finish your day outside Marrakech. A short visit to the Agafay Desert is a fantastic alternative to a multi-day Sahara Desert tour.

The distance between Marrakech and Agafay is 40-60 minutes by car. When you arrive in the Agafay Desert, you can go camel riding, enjoy the magical sunset, and relax with dinner and entertainment at a desert camp.

Day 3: Take a Day Trip to Essaouira

Essaouira is a popular day trip destination where you can enjoy the enchanting atmosphere. Wondering what to do in Essaouira? Stroll around the Medina, shop in the charming markets, enjoy water sports, visit the fish market, and explore the Game of Thrones filming locations. You can easily get to Essaouira by bus, taxi, rental car, or private transfer.

Marrakech is the best base for visiting popular attractions nearby. So, we recommend you add at least 1 extra day to your Morocco Itinerary and take a day trip to Ouzoud Waterfalls.

Day 4: Travel to Casablanca & Visit Hassan II Mosque

Casablanca is one of the best places to visit in Morocco, so don’t miss it on your Morocco Itinerary. You can easily get to Casablanca by bus, train, plane, rental car, or private transfer.

We went from Marrakech to Casablanca by train. A taxi from Jemaa el-Fna Square to Marrakech train station costs around 40-50 MAD (4-5 USD). The train journey to Casablanca train station (Casa Voyageurs) takes 2 hours 40 minutes.

You can buy your train ticket at the station, but avoid the queue and buy it online. The train tickets start from 146 MAD (14.5 USD), depending on the type of train.

We recommend taking one of the morning trains to Casablanca to allow enough time to explore the city. When you arrive, check into your hotel and take a taxi to the Hassan II Mosque.

Make the most of your visit to Casablanca and join a city tour, which includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, a local tour guide/driver, mineral bottled water, a skip-the-line ticket to the mosque, and transportation by a comfortable minivan.

During the tour, you can visit the Hassan II Mosque, Rick’s Café, Old Medina, Arab League Park, Mohammed V Square, and Church of Notre Dame de Lourdes.

Hassan II Mosque is open to non-Muslims. However, visitors are only allowed to enter the mosque during fixed hours.

Day 5: Travel to Morocco’s Blue City

Good morning! It’s time to continue your Morocco Itinerary and travel from Casablanca to Chefchaouen. Most travelers arrive from Tangier or Casablanca to the Blue City, spend 1-2 nights there, and then continue their journey to Fes.

Chefchaouen does not have its own airport or railway station!

We took a bus from Casablanca to Chefchaouen, and the journey time was about 6.5 hours. The cheapest bus tickets start from 93 MAD (9.3 USD). We recommend purchasing your bus ticket at least 1 week in advance.

When you arrive at the CTM bus station in Chefchaouen, take a taxi to the Medina (Old Town), which costs 20-30 MAD (2-3 USD). We arrived in Chefchaouen at around 8 PM.

Day 6: Discover Chefchaouen & Travel to Fes

Are you ready for one of the highlights of your Morocco Itinerary? We recommend you start your day with a delicious breakfast at Cafe Clock and enjoy the stunning view. Then, explore the Blue City, walk through the narrow streets, visit the Kasbah Museum, shop in the vibrant markets, and have lunch at the main square.

Chefchaouen is also famous for its fresh orange juice, so don’t forget to try it. As it is a charming and photogenic city, we recommend spending at least 1-2 full days here.

After exploring the city, it’s time to continue your Morocco Itinerary and head to Fes. We took a bus from Chefchaouen to Fes, and the journey time was about 5 hours. Alternatively, book a private one-way transfer.

The cheapest bus tickets start from 120 MAD (12 USD), and we recommend you buy them 1-2 days in advance.

When you arrive in Fes, take a taxi to the Medina (Blue Gate), about a 10-15 minute drive away. A taxi to the Blue Gate costs around 35 MAD (3.5 USD).

Day 7: Explore Fes

Start your day early and take some photos at the Royal Palace, then head back to your hotel for breakfast and explore the sights of Fes.
The Chouara Tannery is an unmissable attraction in Fes. It is one of the oldest tanneries in the world and the largest in the city. The tannery in Morocco is a facility where animal hides are transformed into leather.

The Medina of Fes was founded in the 9th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fes el-Bali is the oldest walled part of the city and a labyrinth of alleys. Motorbikes and cars are not allowed inside the Medina.

We found that it was much easier to get lost in Fes than in Marrakech. So, for the best experience, join a guided tour and learn more about the city’s history.

Day 8-10: Sahara Desert Tour – A highlight of your Morocco Itinerary

Looking for an unforgettable experience in Morocco? Some Merzouga desert tours start and end in Fes. Day 11: Leave Morocco

We hope you enjoyed your visit to Morocco! But it’s time to leave Marrakech and fly home. Our Morocco Itinerary ends where it began. If you have an early morning flight, we recommend booking a private transfer to the Marrakech Airport or asking your hotel to arrange a taxi.

Absolutely! Morocco is a rich and varied mix of cultures. It is known for its diverse landscapes (Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert, beaches), vibrant markets, imperial and historic cities, delicious food, traditional Moroccan Hammams, and impressive architecture.

Marrakech is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North Africa.

Is it Safe to Travel to Morocco?

Yes, traveling to Morocco is generally safe! Marrakech is one of the safest cities in Morocco for families and solo female travelers. But small thefts and pickpockets can happen everywhere. So always take care of your valuables!

For solo female travelers, we recommend you dress modestly to cover your shoulders, cleavage, and knees. You do not need to wear a headscarf. In addition, do not walk alone at night and book accommodation in Medina for safety.

The locals are friendly. But in less popular places, most people only speak French and Arabic. Drinking tap water is not recommended in Morocco.

How many Days do you Need in Morocco?

Most people choose a 10-day Morocco Itinerary for their first visit. But if you can, we recommend you spend at least two weeks in Morocco and explore the best places at your own pace.

If you have more time, we recommend you visit Rabat, Meknes, Tangier, Agadir, Taghazout, and Tiznit.

Do I need a Visa to Travel to Morocco?

Probably not. Citizens of the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe don’t need a visa to travel to Morocco.

Requirements for entry to Morocco: Valid passport (must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry and have two blank pages). Visas are not required for visits of less than 90 days.

How Much Does it Cost for 10 Days in Morocco?

Morocco is not a cheap country! The cost depends on the mode of transport you choose, which accommodation you prefer, and how much you are willing to pay for restaurants or cafes.

Budget travelers will spend around 65-85 USD per day. Prices are even higher during the peak season (March to May and September to November), so avoid these months if you want to save money! We did this Morocco Itinerary in March.

Morocco is the best place to buy carpets, spices, Moroccan pottery & ceramics, leather bags, wallets, sandals, shoes, and belts. The leather made here is high quality, beautiful and affordable. So bring extra money and shop. But don’t forget to bargain!
