Where is Pergasingan Hill?

Pergasingan Hill, also known as Bukit Pergasingan, is located in Sembalun, North Lombok, in Indonesia.

When to Hike to Pergasingan Hill?

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

Lombok is a popular destination all year round! But the best time to visit Pergasingan Hill is during the dry season, from May to October.

The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring Lombok Island.

The busiest time to visit Lombok is between July and August. The rainy season runs from November to April.

We visited Lombok in May, and it was a fantastic experience to see the beautiful landscape at Pergasingan Hill.

This is a popular hiking and camping spot among locals, so avoid visiting on weekends as it can get crowded!

Good to know
Unlike Mount Rinjani, Pergasingan Hill is open all year round!

To get to Pergasingan Hill, you first need to get to Lombok Island, Indonesia.

The best way to visit Pergasingan Hill is to join a day trip from Senaru or Sembalun.

If you don’t want to do the Pergasingan Hill hike independently, we recommend booking your trek online through Viator. You can book a guided day hike or an overnight camping adventure.

Alternatively, you can get there by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver.

We rented a scooter and explored Lombok at our own pace. Always wear a helmet and avoid driving at night!

The distance between Senaru and Sembalun is 40-50 minutes by motorbike. From Senaru, we traveled by motorbike to Sembalun and visited Pergasingan Hill.

Scooter rental starts from 65,000 IDR (4,35 USD) per day, but we don’t recommend paying more than 75,000 IDR (5 USD).

How to Hike on Pergasingan Hill Without a Guide

You can do the Pergasingan Hill hike independently. The peak of Pergasingan Hill is 1750 meters above sea level, so you have to climb about 600 meters altitude.

It’s a steep hike but well worth the effort when you see the magnificent views of Mount Rinjani volcano, green mountain peaks, and colorful agricultural fields below.

The nearby Mount Rinjani hike is difficult and only recommended for those who are in good physical condition.

Therefore, the Pergasingan Hill trek is perfect for those who want to enjoy the view of Mount Rinjani or are looking for a less challenging hike.

Buy your tickets at the building in front of the Camping Ground 1000 Meter and fill in a short registration form (name, country, age, etc.).

Then, you can leave your motorbike next to the ticket office and set off on the trekking trail.

Pergasingan Hill Hike

Sembalun is the starting point of the trek.

From the parking lot, start walking, cross the bridge, and follow the road for about 5 minutes until you see a small sign on the left side showing where the Pergasingan Hill trail begins.

The hike uphill takes about 1.5-2 hours, depending on how many breaks you take.

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, but this is the most challenging part of the hike, with high altitude, steep steps, and slippery parts.

This section takes about 30-40 minutes, after which the hike becomes easier, and you can walk along the ridge.

TIP
You can easily book a tour of Pergasingan Hill through Viator.

It will take about 50-60 minutes to reach the first campground. From there, you can enjoy the fantastic views, meet the locals, and take beautiful photos on the swing.

If you have time, continue your trek to the second camping site or end the hike and head downhill.

On the way down, the hike is much faster and can take about 1 hour.

TIP
We don’t recommend this hike during the rainy season or after rain, as the trail can be muddy and slippery.

Our Hiking Experience

The tropical weather is always unpredictable in Lombok. When we visited Sembalun, the weather was warm and dry, but the mountains were covered in fog.

If you are not planning to spend the night on the hill, we don’t recommend starting the hike in the afternoon as it takes a long time!

In the afternoon the weather is too hot and humid. It’s more comfortable to hike at sunrise or in the morning.

We did this trek on a Friday, and there were a lot of locals on the path, so in many places, we were slow to hike or had to wait.

In fact, we started the hike at 3 PM and had to hurry to descend the hill and drive back to Senaru before dark.

We don’t recommend hurrying during the trek, as there are slippery and steep parts in many places, and we slipped twice on the way down.

The Pergasingan Hill hike is well worth it, so we wouldn’t recommend skipping it from your Lombok Itinerary.
