Where is Lombok?

Lombok is an island located in West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia.

Best Time to Visit Lombok

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

Lombok is a popular destination all year round! But the best time to visit Lombok is during the dry season, from May to October.

August is the driest month! The weather is sunny and dry during these months, perfect for swimming, hiking, and exploring Lombok Island.

Lombok has a tropical climate with high humidity, and the average temperature is 28°C all year round.

It’s good to know that during the rainy season (from November to April) or when the sea conditions are bad, the boat schedules can change and be delayed a lot!

The busiest time to visit Lombok is between July and August. We did this Lombok Itinerary in May.

TIP
In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation, ferry tickets, and tours in advance!

How to Get to Lombok

Most people come to Lombok from the Gili Islands or Bali and start their Lombok Itinerary.

Getting to Lombok may seem difficult, but depending on your time and budget, there are several ways to get there.

There are three ways to get from Bali to Lombok: by fast boat (1.5-3 hours), slow ferry (5-7 hours), and plane (40 minutes).

TIP
Use Skyscanner to find cheap flights to Lombok, Indonesia.

The fast ferry or plane is the most comfortable and quickest way to get from Bali to Lombok.

We have a detailed post on how to get to Lombok with all the information you need.

How to get to Lombok

The Ultimate Lombok Itinerary for 2 Weeks

Day 1: Arrive at Gili Air, Lombok

Welcome to Lombok! Gili Air is the best place to start your Lombok and Gili Islands Itinerary.

The Gili Islands consist of three small islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air) located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia.

How to Get to Gili Air from Bali

The Gili Islands are the perfect escape from Bali for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

You can get to the Gili Islands from Bali by public ferry, speed boat, and helicopter, or fly into Lombok and travel by boat from there.

The fast boat is the most comfortable and quickest way to get from Bali to Gili Air!

Fast boat tickets usually cost between 330,000 IDR and 750,000 IDR (about 22 USD and 50 USD) per person.

TIP
You can easily buy boat tickets at any port, but we recommend booking online with 12Go!

From Bali, ferries depart to Gili Air from Sanur, Padang Bai, Serangan, and Amed harbors.

The fast ferry ride from Bali to the Gili Islands usually takes around 2-6 hours, depending on the port, stops, waiting times, and sea conditions.

Day 2-3: Visit the Gili Islands

Good morning! It’s time to continue your Lombok Itinerary!

Visiting the Gili Islands is one of the best things to do in Lombok, so don’t miss it. Its tropical white sandy, palm tree-covered beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters are the perfect places for beach lovers.

We recommend you explore Gili Air on your second day, and then the next day, take a day trip or snorkel tour to Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. Book your snorkeling tour with GetYourGuide.

Good to know
The Gili Islands are car-free, and as there are no cars, you can only get around on foot or by bicycle, electric scooter, and horse-drawn carriages.

Which is the Best Gili Island?

  • Gili Trawangan: Gili Trawangan is the most popular and largest of the three islands. “Gili T” is known as the party island. Most accommodations and restaurants are there.
  • Gili Meno: Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest island, perfect for a romantic holiday. Most people take a day trip to the underwater statues of Gili Meno.
  • Gili Air: Gili Air is a mix of the two islands, with a relaxed atmosphere, beaches, fantastic accommodations, and great bars. It was our favorite Gili Island!

In our opinion, each Gili island is unique and well worth a visit! It only depends on your preferences which island is ideal for you.

Are you ready for one of the highlights of your Lombok Itinerary? Senggigi is a coastal town which is a popular beach destination in Indonesia with beautiful untouched sandy beaches, palm trees, and crystal clear turquoise waters.

Depending on when you arrive in Senggigi, you can choose to start exploring or relax at one of the beach resorts.

How to Get to Senggigi from the Gili Islands

From the Gili Islands, boats run regularly to Lombok.

The journey takes approximately 1 hour from Gili Trawangan to Bangsal Port, and boat tickets start from 10 USD per person.

We traveled by boat from Gili Air to Senggigi, and the journey took 20 minutes to Bangsal Harbour. The boat ticket starts from 6 USD per person, which includes hotel shuttle service in Senggigi.

The distance between Senggigi and Bangsal Port is 35 minutes.

You can easily buy boat tickets at any port, but we recommend booking online with 12Go!

Good to know
The boats don’t usually leave at the exact departure time, as they leave when they are full, so you should arrive at least 30 minutes before departure!

Day 5-6: Explore Senggigi

You can spend 2 relaxing days in Senggigi on your Lombok Itinerary.

One of the best things to do in Senggigi is to rent a scooter and discover the coastline and beaches on your own. This is the best way to find hidden gems, the best restaurants, or meet the locals.

As there are many beautiful photo spots along the way, allow more time to get from one place to another!

In Senggigi, two beaches you should not miss: Nipah Beach and Pandanan Beach. Trust us, you will not be disappointed by their beauty.

Good to know
We started our Lombok Island Itinerary in Senggigi, so we rented a motorbike there.

Good morning! It’s time to continue your Lombok Itinerary. Check out from your accommodation, have breakfast, and travel by scooter or private transfer to Senaru.

The distance between Senggigi and Senaru is 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Senaru is famous for its beautiful hiking trails, stunning waterfalls, and lush rice terraces. It is a small village and is the gateway to Mount Rinjani for hikers.

As the journey time from Senggigi to Senaru is short, after arrival, you can visit the Senaru traditional village and explore some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Lombok.

Book your waterfall tour with GetYourGuide.

Tiu Kelep & Sendang Gile Waterfall

Tiu Kelep is one of the most famous waterfalls in Indonesia, so don’t miss it on your Lombok Itinerary.

Once you arrive at the waterfall, buy your entrance ticket and start your hike on the marked trail. You can walk down (10-15 minutes) the concrete steps from the entrance to the Sendang Gile Waterfall.

From Sendang Gile Waterfall, head back towards the entrance and turn left at the sign for Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

Day 8: Mount Rinjani Tour

Are you looking for an unforgettable adventure on your Lombok itinerary? Mount Rinjani is the most popular and challenging hike in Lombok.

At 3726 meters, Mount Rinjani is the second-highest peak in Indonesia, where you can do an epic crater rim hike.

Depending on your time, fitness level, and budget, you can choose a 1-night or multi-day Mount Rinjani tour.

The most popular option if you’re short on time is a 2-day, 1-night trek, but if you want to get the most out of your experience, we recommend booking a 3-day, 2-night hike.

The tour price includes meals and drinks, a trekking guide, a porter, and camping equipment. We recommend booking your trek online through GetYourGuide.

The pick-up time is usually in the early morning. You can start your epic trek after paying the entrance fee and registering.

Mount Rinjani National Park entrance fee is 150,000 IDR (10 USD) /day/person.

On this day you will spend the night on the mountain.

Good to know
We do not recommend the difficult hike to Mount Rinjani if you are not in good physical condition!

Selong Belanak Beach is a perfect place for relaxing, swimming, and for beginner surfers. You can rent surfboards, take surf lessons, and eat delicious local food in the warungs.

Pantai Mawi is one of the best surfing beaches in Kuta, recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers. You can get to Mawi Beach in approximately 45-60 minutes. If you turn off the main road, the road conditions will be bad (the path is unpaved and very bumpy.)

We’ve put together a list of the most beautiful beaches in Lombok.

Day 13: Visit Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Are you looking for one of the best waterfalls in your Lombok Itinerary?

Benang Kelambu was our favorite waterfall in Indonesia. A magnificent wall of vines with cascades is one of the most beautiful scenery we have seen in Lombok.

The best way to visit Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfall is to join a day trip from Kuta. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from Kuta to the waterfalls.

Book your waterfall tour through Viator.

Alternatively, you can get there by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver.

Yes, Lombok is generally safe. However, always keep an eye on your valuables and beware of pickpockets!

Always stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and have travel insurance!

How to Get Around Lombok

Getting around Lombok is easy. Unlike Nusa Penida, Lombok has good paved roads!

The best way to get around on your 2-week Lombok Itinerary is to rent a scooter or hire a private driver.

We rented a motorbike and explored Lombok at our own pace. Scooter rental starts from 65,000 IDR (4,35 USD) per day, but we don’t recommend paying more than 75,000 IDR (5 USD).

Buy an eSIM and data package for Indonesia.

TIP
If you rent a scooter for several days, ask for a discount!

How many Days do you Need in Lombok?

Most people choose a 5-day Lombok Itinerary for their first visit.

We think 14 days is more comfortable for exploring Lombok Island, but you can do this route in 10 days!

Is Lombok Cheaper than Bali?

In fact, the prices are very similar to Bali! Prices are even higher during the peak season (from July to August), so avoid these months if you want to save money!

TIP
Save money, avoid ATM transaction fees when going abroad, and pay in local currency with a Wise Card.
